For this commission the clients wanted high quality fitted furniture not your standard plastic veneered particle board a lot of cabinet makers use. They also wanted it to perfectly fit the space. I first removed the existing cabinetry and shelves and fitted built-in cabinets and bookcases either side of the chimney and a mantel piece. I took particular care to perfectly match the stepped shape of the chimney breast. One of the cabinets has a door and is used for storage, the other was left open to store firewood. It’s constructed entirely of solid rimu and finished in a hardwax oil.
