For this project I was commissioned to build a library and entertainment unit, install wainscoting and build an archway between the kitchen and living room. The client’s home is arts and crafts style, built in the late 1920’s. The design of the new pieces had to be sympathetic to the existing features of the home.

The library and entertainment unit is constructed entirely from solid rimu with a dark hard-wax oil stain. The doors have woven brass mesh panels and solid brass hardware. The unit has built in speakers as well as cleverly concealing a projector and screen. The projector screen is built into the pelmet at the top and a projector is hidden in the drawer in the centre cabinet. The drawer housing the projector is automated by actuators. On voice command the projector screen lowers, the drawer housing the projector comes out and the projector turns on ready to watch.

Wainscoting was installed in the entrance, hallway and stairway to match existing wainscoting in the home. It is constructed from a combination of solid maple and hardwood ply. The original rimu skirting was removed and refinished in the same dark hard-wax oil stain as the library.

An existing single width door between the kitchen and living room was opened up with the archway added as a design feature. It features custom millwork and is constructed from hard maple as its subtle wood grain allows for a high-quality paint finish as well as being hard wearing.
