MARITIME HISTORY

For this commission I built a totara and kauri dining table as well as a bench seat to go with it. The timber used to construct the table and bench seat were supplied by the client and have an interesting maritime history. The totara comes from reclaimed wharf piles from Tauranga harbour and the kauri was a beam section from the Bean Rock lighthouse in Auckland Harbour. There are tiles inlaid into the dining tabletop which were recovered from a shipwreck.

In reference to the nautical history of the materials an oversized dovetail, as commonly used in wooden boat construction, was used to connect the table legs to the table apron. The bench seat top is inspired by yacht decks with thin strips of totara between the kauri planks. The table and bench are finished in danish oil.
